29/05/2010 The Beethoven Ensemble: Folk Song and Dance
Saturday 29th May 2010, 8pm, Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge
Programme:
Beethoven Violin Concerto – Arisa Fujita, violin
Sibelius Symphony no. 3
Conductor: Daniel Hill
Violin: Arisa Fujita
The final concert in our Cambridge Series is a celebration of folk song, dance and merriment. Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is one of the most soulful and joyful of all the violin concertos (though Sibelius’s is close) – the third movement Rondo erupting in a great dance. Influences from Finnish folk music are discernible in the very first chords of the Sibelius’s Third Symphony. There were also some programmatic notions behind it. In Paris in January 1906, after a period of lively celebrations, Sibelius played three themes to the painter Oscar Parviainen: Funeral March, A Prayer to God and A Great Feast. The Symphony is more classical than his first two, arcing back to a Beethovenian style, both musically and in orchestration.

21/03/2010 Northern Chords: The North East Chamber Music Festival
The Sage Gateshead
Hall 2
Sunday 21 March 2010, 7.30pm
The gala closing concert of the Northern Chords festival will take place in the altogether more modern surroundings of The Sage Gateshead’s Hall 2, on the rejuvenated banks of the River Tyne.
Designed by Lord Foster and opened in December 2004 as part of the twenty-first century renaissance of the Gateshead Quayside alongside the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, The Sage Gateshead has completely transformed the once-stagnant banks of the Tyne, previously the home of cattle markets and ironworks.
The concert, beginning at 7.30pm, is likely to include*:

20/03/2010 Northern Chords: The North East Chamber Music Festival
St Andrew’s Church
Corbridge
Saturday 20 March 2010, 7.30pm
The Saxon Tower of St Andrew’s was built in 774 on the command of Saint Wilfred, responsible also for the building of last year’s Northern Chords concert host Hexham Abbey. By the fourteenth century an entire church building was added to the early tower and arch, using stones marauded from the Roman camp of Corstopitum.
With elements of Saxon, Roman and Norman architecture, this church was once an outpost for Saint Wilfred’s monks, and is now a hub of the local community. On Saturday 20 March, Northern Chords brings vaulting chamber music to the proud arches of St Andrew’s.
The concert, beginning at 7.30pm, is likely to include*:
J.S. Bach – tbc
A brand-new commission exclusively for Northern Chords
F. Schubert – tbc
F. Schubert – String Quintet in C, D.956
Violin, viola and cello
*N.B. All concert programmes are provisional, and subject to change at any time.

19/03/2010 Northern Chords: The North East Chamber Music Festival
St Mary’s Church
Whickham
Friday 19 March 2010, 7.30pm
St Mary’s Church in Whickham is a picturesque, Grade I Norman church, which was rebuilt in 1860, seating 400 people.
A homely, intimate place of worship, it is located within a perfectly tended graveyard, the headstones of which include a memorial to William Shield, the world-renowned 18th century composer and violinist, who was born and raised in nearby Swalwell.
Shield became Master of the King’s Music in London in 1817 and was in that capacity closely associated with music of the same style as will be performed by the best young talent in the Friday opening concert of Northern Chords, 180 years after his death and burial in Poets Corner at Westminster Abbey.
The concert, beginning at 7.30pm, is likely to include*:
L.v. Beethoven – Piano Trio in D Major “Ghost Trio” Op.70/1
Piano, violin and cello
R. Schumann – Liederkreis Op.39
For tenor and piano
J. Brahms – tbc
For tenor and piano
J. Brahms – Piano Quartet in C minor Op.60
